With the vacuum left by Jair Bolsonaro, governors of several states traveled to Glasgow for the 26th United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP-26), in search of opportunities and of course, to try and change Brazil’s negative image.
Thirteen of the 22 governors who make up the Green Brazil Consortium were there. This organization was created to coordinate actions to defend the environment and, in a way, counteract the dismantling of Brazilian environmental policy. They also work together to tackle climate change.
“With the Green Brazil Consortium, fruit of the coalition of governors for climate, we have created a bold and innovative instrument that prepares us to attract national and international resources to finance renewable energy alternatives and measures capable of reducing CO2 emissions,” tweeted governor Renato Casagrande (Brazilian Socialist Party – PSB) on Friday.
At COP-26, governors of Minas Gerais, Romeu Zema (NOVO party) and Mato Grosso, Mauro Mendes (Democrats party – DEM) will present goals achieved by their states. Both joined the “Race To Zero” campaign: Mato Grosso has set the goal to zero carbon emissions by 2035, and of Minas Gerais, to achieve the neutralization of net carbon emissions by 2050.
Zema will be one of the speakers at the opening panel of the Cities, Regions, and Built Environments Day Action Event, on November 11.
Helder Barbalho (Brazilian Democratic Movement – MDB) is lined up to be the official representative of the nine states that make up the Legal Amazon region, which comprises Acre, Amapá, Amazonas, Maranhão, Mato Grosso, Pará, Rondônia, Roraima, and Tocantins.
The Worker’s Party (PT) governments will be represented by the governor of Rio Grande do Norte, Fátima Bezerra, who will “discuss the progress of the implementation of clean and renewable energy in Rio Grande do Norte, which has the largest complex of wind power generating parks in Brazil”. Furthermore, the governor of Piauí, Wellington Dias has prepared a portfolio of environmental projects to present at the conference.
From the Brazilian Social Democracy Party (PSDB), Eduardo Leite, governor of Rio Grande do Sul, and João Dória, governor of São Paulo, will also be among the Brazilian authorities present at COP-26.
