The United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP-26) promoted a debate on Feminist Actions in Climate Justice, which was attended by grassroots activists seeking to tackle the climate crisis around the world. The discussion revolved around guidelines such as the paths to true climate justice based on human rights, gender equality, and environmental integrity. The participants also shared the struggles faced by these activists.

At the meeting, other equally urgent issues were also addressed, such as deaths of environmental advocates, impacts of the climate crisis on women, patriarchy, deaths of women as a result of the climate crisis, Indigenous organizations, and climate refugees.

The talk began with the poet and musician, Kavita Naidu, stating the importance of discussing gender and climate, because the debate on the climate crisis does not revolve only around large corporations.

“No one talks about the injustice that has brought us to this place and here we are as feminist activists because we need to remind people from all over the world that essentially, it is the North of the globe that is responsible for climate injustice in the world today, and we in South face disproportionate impacts for something that we did not begin,” commented Kavita.

The event then featured the remote participation of three feminist activists, Bina Devi Rai from Nepal, Sanam Amin from Bangladesh, and Neolene Nabulivou from Fiji. The activists spoke about the continuity of colonialism, capitalism, species extinction and criticized the patriarchy, especially Neolene, who remarked, “Everything that is social, economic and ecological is about climate justice”.

The talk continued in loco, with the participation of other feminist and climate activists, such as Zilmara, from Colombia, Marie Christina Kolo, from Madagascar, Tarsila Rivera, from Peru, and Mara, from the United States.
