Bruna Obadowski, da Cobertura NINJA na COP26

Under a temperature of 6°C, the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26) started this Sunday (31). The ceremony took place at the Scottish Event Campus. The places used to house the delegations gave way to beds to house Covid patients.

In her speech, the executive secretary of the Climate Convention, Patricia Espinosa, talked about the expectations after the meeting in Madrid, at COP25. “Our long wait is over. Let’s see what we achieved. We are at a crucial point in history. Either we choose to reach rapid, large-scale emissions reductions to maintain the goal of limiting global warming to 1.5°C or we accept that humanity faces a bleak future on this planet”, emphasizing that the results of COP26 will define the fate of the next generations.

“Either we choose to recognize that ‘business as usual’ is not worth the devastating price we are paying and make the necessary transition to a more sustainable future, or we accept that we are investing in our own extinction”, she warned.

Check out some statements:

“We know that tackling climate change has to be cross-cutting, which is why we have called on the ministers of Finance, Energy, Science and Transport to drive a multi-sectoral transformation”, said Chile’s Environment minister and COP25 president Carolina Schmidt. She opened the ceremony and passed the presidency to Alok Sharma.

“We know that the 1.5.C window is closing. In every country we are seeing the devastating impacts of climate. Floods, cyclones, forest fires, record temperatures. We know that our planet is changing for the worse. And we can only address that together, through this international system. Rapid and intense climate change is making it clear that COP26 is our last, best hope of making (the limit of) 1.5°C achievable. The work begins today. We will succeed or fail. As a whole”, said Sharma.

“We share a single atmosphere and a single climate system”, said Hoesung Lee, the chairman of the UN’s scientific panel on climate (IPCC), warning of the need for engagement by all countries.
